Artists in Schools

Artists in Schools is a long-running schools artist residency program. It was established to encourage students' participation in and appreciation of the arts through creative interaction with a professional arts practitioner. Areas of focus include:

  • seeing a professional artist at work and learning about the artists' role in the community;
  • working alongside a professional artist on an arts project; and
  • learning about the artistic process.

Artists in Schools provides opportunities to develop partnerships between schools, communities and artists, while achieving a creative artistic outcome through a considered and integrated process. The program is designed to engage students and their teachers in stimulating arts experiences that add richness and depth to their learning.

Artists in Schools residencies:

  • encourages student involvement in the creative process;
  • supports student learning as they gain new skills and knowledge;
  • provides opportunities to assist the development of confidence and self-esteem in students;
  • supports teachers in their delivery of the curriculum;
  • supports the professional learning of teachers;
  • promotes the value of the arts within the school and broader community; and
  • enriches and adds new perspectives to the schools existing arts curriculum in line with the Australian Curriculum.

More than 75,000 South Australian students in junior primary, primary, secondary and area schools have participated in Artists in Schools.
