The disciplines and medium in art I am familiar with are varied. Painting, drawing and sketches range from still life and landscape in oils, acrylic, charcoal and graphite. Coming from Malaysia, I naturally have a passion and strong interest in my country's traditional art form, known as Batik (employing manual wax-resist dyeing technique) as well as silk screen printing and mixed media.
I am fortunate to have the pleasure of engaging with school students, ranging from 4 to 18 years of age in Malaysia and Adelaide. The workshops and art activities have included drawing and painting techniques, silk screen printing, batik, murals, clay modeling and sculpture, craft works and more of similar nature. I have organised and conducted workshops for teachers, study tours for students and teachers and art competitions in Malaysia, namely the Malaysia-Japan Children Art Competition and Exhibition.
At Carclew Youth Arts holiday program, I was very privileged to be given the opportunity to participate in and run workshops such as ‘Make Your Mark Through Printing’, ‘Ethnic Batik In Modern World’, ‘Fly Your Designs In The Sky’ and ‘Recycle Creatively’, 2012 WOMADelaide Kidzone Workshops and Shadow Play with students from 5 to 15 years old.
'Swee Wah Yew has been working... in the mainstream and New Arrivals classes of our school since June this year [2011]. Teachers with whom she has worked regard her skills with children highly. She has worked one to one with some of the Chinese students of the NAP Unit to explain learning tasks in mandarin and support their understanding in English. I have found Swee Wah to be hardworking, conscientious and courteous.'
