Carclew Futures

For Youth

Carclew Futures is a partnership with the Commissioner for Children and Young People (CCYP) to build the cultural agency of children and young people and support their capacity as influencers, thinkers and decision makers, and profile young artists and their work.

In 2019, Carclew assembled a team of 10 young people, aged 12-15, to direct arts funding to projects of their choice. Facilitators worked with the team to investigate how art is made, the costs involved, and what it takes to get funding. In this ground-breaking project the young people designed a rigorous funding framework and process, and then distributed $10,000 of arts funding to the selected artists.

Carclew Futures is now building the visibility and reputations of young South Australian artists through a series of 10 profiles of ‘young artists to watch’ on the CCYP hub website. Artists discuss their creative practice, inspirations, aspirations, successes, and challenges. The profiles provide role models for other young artists and demonstrate potential pathways.

The project resulted in two recipients being selected to receive a share of $10,000 funding…

Port Lincoln’s 14-year-old Charlee Watt, received $5,000 to create a large portable backdrop for live youth events and indigenous gatherings. Read more here.

Also receiving $5,000 in funding was Elizabeth Vale visual artist, Chad Spencer, who will produce a hayshed mural along the Mt Compass to Goolwa Road – the first of an ‘I-spy-with-my-little-eye’ art-trail across a series of haysheds. Read more here.
